Turning Hardship into Heart: Taco Bell Team Member Receives Scholarship to Pursue Passion in Prosthetics

Passions are born from moments of influence in our lives. Whether good or bad these moments feed ambitions and spark change.

For Tacala Taco Bell Team Member, Uriel M., this life changing moment came in the aftermath of a devastating tornado that hit his hometown. His brother lost his leg while protecting him during the disaster, which ultimately led Uriel to seek ways to create better, more accessible prosthetics, especially for those in low-income communities.

I want to tell other people who are chasing their dreams to continue chasing them.

There’s going to be very big bumps in the road and holes, and sometimes you just wish you can quit and decide to take the easy way out. And I believe that instead of doing that, they should continue pushing.

Uriel M.,
2025 Live Más Scholar

Taco Bell Foundation surprised Uriel with his $25,000 Live Más Scholarship at his Taco Bell restaurant in Russellville, AL, surrounded by his family, friends, colleagues and representatives from Tacala Companies. Uriel plans to use his scholarship to continue his research by studying biomedical engineering at the University of Southern California.

“We believe in our students, our employees getting an education,” said Laura Maravi, Vice President of Operations for Taco Bell Franchisee, Tacala Companies. “We are blessed to be able to help our employees with their goals.”
